 In a bold and progressive move, the Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Alban Bagbin, has announced his intention to implement a 24-hour economy policy within the corridors of Ghana's Parliament. This initiative, he explained, is aimed at enhancing productivity, improving legislative efficiency, and setting an example for other national institutions.

Speaking at a press briefing in Accra, Bagbin emphasized the urgent need for Ghana’s public institutions to adapt to modern demands. "We cannot continue to run a 9-to-5 system in a country that aspires to compete on the global stage. Parliament must lead by example," he stated.

The 24-hour economy model, which allows continuous workflow in three shifts across the day, is expected to fast-track the processing of bills, debates, committee work, and public service delivery. Under this system, parliamentary support staff, research officers, security, and administrative units will operate round the clock on a shift basis, while ensuring lawmakers have extended resources to perform their duties.

Bagbin noted that this policy will be rolled out in phases, beginning with the core departments most affected by legislative workloads. He also mentioned the inclusion of digital tools and enhanced lighting, security, and staff welfare schemes to support the move.

Stakeholders and civil society groups have lauded the initiative, describing it as timely and forward-thinking. Many believe this will not only increase accountability and responsiveness within the legislative arm but also boost employment opportunities, especially for the youth.

As the nation watches closely, Bagbin’s initiative could mark a transformative chapter in Ghana’s governance, signaling the start of a more dynamic and responsive public sector driven by round-the-clock service.
