The upcoming parliamentary rerun in Ablekuma North has sparked discussions about security and fairness, especially after disruptions during the 2024 general elections. Joshua Alabi, the Greater Accra Regional Director of Elections for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), recently shared his confidence in a smooth and peaceful process this time around.
Learning from Past Mistakes
Alabi acknowledged that the previous elections had security lapses and shortcomings from the Electoral Commission (EC). However, he emphasized that both the EC and security agencies have taken steps to improve.
“The EC and security have done their homework well,” he stated, highlighting new measures like name tags for officials to enhance accountability.
A More Organized Approach
With only 19 polling stations involved, Alabi believes the rerun will be far more organized. “From what I’ve seen on the ground, I don’t foresee the same challenges as last time,” he said. He also stressed the NDC’s role in maintaining peace, adding, “If we are present and vigilant, nothing untoward will happen.”
Commitment to Fairness
Alabi reassured the public that the NDC is committed to democratic principles, fairness, and integrity during the rerun. Meanwhile, the Accra High Court dismissed an injunction filed by the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) parliamentary candidate, Nana Akua Afriyie, clearing the way for the rerun to proceed as planned.
Looking Ahead
As Ablekuma North prepares for this critical rerun, the focus remains on transparency, security, and a smooth electoral process. With lessons learned and improved measures in place, stakeholders are hopeful for a peaceful and successful outcome.
